San Jose State beach volleyball (5-5) fell twice in its back-to-back matches against Saint Mary’s and Stanford on Sunday at Stanford Beach Volleyball Complex.
The Spartans first match against the Gaels (6-3) ended with a 5-0 loss.
SJSU sophomores Thaliana Grajeda and Kaitlynn Zdroik pushed their match to three sets after winning the second one 21-19. However, sophomores Morgan Kendrick and Jennifer Laird took home the point for the match 21-18, 16-14.
SMC’s freshmen Chandler Cowell and Selbie Christensen handed junior Julia Golbeck and freshman Sarah Smevog their first lost of the season in straight sets, 21-14, 21-19. The pair dropped to 8-1.
The second match of the day ended with another defeat from Stanford (4-7), 4-1.
The junior pair Luiza Andrade and Giulia Gavio fell to freshmen Tori Ashkinos and Charlie Ekstrom twice, 21-17.
Golbeck and Smevog made a comeback against Stanford and gave SJSU its only point for the match. The pair won both sets 21-18 and 21-19.
The fifth match ended with Grajeda and Zdroik falling in a three-set match against freshmen Maddie Dailey and Jordan McKinney 21-17, 21-19, 15-10.
SJSU heads to Folsom for another doubleheader against Saint Mary’s and Sacramento State. The first match against the Gaels is set for 2 p.m on Friday, followed by a 5 p.m. match with the Hornets.
