No. 11 San Jose State men’s water polo (4-3) lost 14-10 to No. 5 Fordham (6-0) on Sunday.
Sophomore utility Sam Keightley topped the stat sheet for the Spartans with 4 goals, followed by sophomore driver Aidan Johnson with 3 goals.
Senior center Giancarlo Marquez, junior 2-meter defender Mateja Cetkovic and senior utility Louis Fehrensen each scored 1 goal.
The Spartans kept pace early before Fordham pulled away, ending the first half down 9-4.
The Spartans opened the third quarter with three straight goals. They added a fourth to close the quarter, while Fordham managed 1 goal, cutting Fordham’s lead to two, 10-8.
Fordham junior attacker Andras Toth halted the Spartans’ momentum in the fourth quarter, scoring to push the lead to three goals.
Fordham freshman goalkeeper Viktor Savic shined and completed the match with 9 saves against the Spartans. While SJSU senior goalkeeper Alexey Poletaev tallied 5 saves.
The match was the Spartans’ first against Fordham since they lost 13-9 in the NCAA Water Polo Championship quarterfinals in December 2025.
The Spartans have lost the last four matches against Fordham, with their most recent win dating back to October 2023. Each of those losses had been close, with none decided by more than four goals. The tightest of the four came in October 2025, when the Spartans fell 10-9.
The Spartans look to bounce back when action resumes on Friday in Palo Alto, Calif.
