San Jose State women’s soccer (0-4-2) was shut out by Saint Mary’s College (6-0-3), 2-0, at the Spartan Soccer Complex on Sunday.
The Gaels struck early with a goal by senior defender Molly Silva, off a free kick on top of the box in the 12th minute. The second goal came in the 37th minute by sophomore forward Ashlyn Vaughn with a tap-in off a cross by freshman forward Brianna Jurasek.
The Spartans failed to answer despite a better performance in the second half.
“We started off a little slower than I anticipated,” SJSU head coach Sonia Curvelo said. “We gave them a lot of space where we were dropping off.”
The Spartans shot a total of 9 shots, with 6 on target. They were unable to capitalize on set pieces near the goal and had 1 corner compared with 6 corners for the Gaels.
“It’s just us converting our chances,” Curvelo said. “We got to look at being more dynamic in the final third.”
SJSU junior goalkeeper Paige Fry was busy in the net, totaling 8 saves. Fry is ranked within the top three in saves per game and total saves for goalkeepers in the Mountain West Conference.
“She did really well,” Curvelo said. “She made some big plays for us.”
Saint Mary’s dominated the first half, scoring 2 goals on 11 shots.
“They have some crafty players,” Fry said. “Our backline gave them a little bit more of a struggle, but overall they were picking us apart.”
SJSU created more opportunities in the second half and gained more possession.
“We were a lot more connected and were transitioning better,” freshman forward Abigail Peterman said. “It’s just executing when we’re finishing the transition in the end.”
The Spartans will face Sacramento State at 7 p.m. on Thursday for their Senior Day at the Spartan Soccer Complex, San Jose, Calif.
