Football preview: Spartans host Cowboys In spooky showdown

By Gio Gaxiola — Reporter

San Jose State football (4-4, 2-2 MW) squares off against the University of Wyoming (4-3, 0-3 MW) in a spooky matchup on Halloween weekend.

One big question for the Spartans going into the game is who is gonna be under center? Sophomore quarterback Nick Nash has led SJSU to a 1-2 record since taking over as starter. While the Sparatns would love to have graduate Nick Starkel back, look forward to seeing Nash trying to build off of last week’s success.

Graduate tight end Derrick Deese Jr. has been on a tear as of late, posting back-to-back 100 receiving yard games. He will have his hands full this weekend as he faces a Cowboys defense that ranks first in passing defense in the Mountain West Conference.

The offensive line for SJSU has been improving as the season goes along. A big reason for that has been graduate tackle Jack Snyder, who last week became the leader in games started by a Spartan in SJSU history with 48. The unit only gave up one sack last week against UNLV. They have another favorable matchup this week as Wyoming ranks 10th in the MW with 15 sacks this season.

The run game for the Spartans has to get going early and often on Saturday. The unit is one of the only teams in the MW to not break 1,000 rushing yards this season, they also only have nine rushing touchdowns. If the Spartans are gonna have any hope at winning this game, it is going to be because of senior running back Tyler Nevens and company.

Graduate punter Will Hart has been a key component in the Spartans special teams. The transfer ranks third in the MW in punting yards and average. Hart has been a blessing in disguise for SJSU, he will look to continue that trend against Wyoming.

The Cowboys offense has been struggling as of late. Only posting a combined 17 points in a span of three games. SJSU senior linebacker Kyle Harmon, who leads the MW in total tackles with 77 looks to keep the Cowboys offensive woes continueing.

The game will take place on Saturday afternoon at 1 p.m. at CEFCU Stadium and can be seen on FS2.
