The flags were flowing and the field lights illuminated the Spartan Soccer Complex as night fell upon the Spartans and Cougars on Friday.

The San José State men’s soccer team (8-5-3, 6-1-2 WAC) hosted Chicago State (2-11-3, 0-7-2 WAC) in their final home stretch this season.

The Spartans looked to advance their unbeaten streak to eight matches. This is their best stretch since 2009.

SJSU controlled the ball from start to finish in the first half despite a scoreless tie entering the second half. The Spartans had five shots on goal while limiting the Cougars to zero.

Cougars graduate goalkeeper Joe Bowles saved all five attempts in the first half.

The second half of the match was more evenly played with each team having three shots on goal.

Junior goalkeeper David Sweeney had two big saves after the 80th minute to keep the Spartans in the game.

“I try to keep my head in the game by commanding the backline and making sure we’re organized,” said Sweeney.

Regular time ended scoreless as the Spartans and Cougars looked to win it in overtime.

After 110 minutes of play, the game ended 0-0.

After numerous last-minute attempts, the Spartans were not able to capitalize on the opportunities.

“I give full credit to [Chicago State] and nothing else,” said head coach Simon Tobin.

SJSU will honor their senior players as they play their final home game of the season on Sunday against Houston Baptist at 3 p.m.
