SJSU Water Polo pulls away from Harvard in 14-8 Victory

San Jose State men’s water polo team opened Saturday’s Aggie Roundup with a convincing 14-8 victory over No. 18 Harvard, using a strong second half to pull away from the Crimson.

The Spartans took an early 3-2 lead after the first period, with Harvard staying in striking distance throughout the opening half. 

The Spartans extended their advantage with a 4-3 lead in the second period and controlled a 7-5 lead going into halftime.

SJSU continued to control the game after the halftime break, outshooting Harvard 3-2 in the third period before shutting the door on Harvard with a huge 4-1 fourth period. 

The Spartans’ defense limited the Crimson to 1 goal in the final period to achieve the 14-8 win. 

The Spartans had major contributions from several players offensively. 

Junior utility Samu Biros found the net multiple times, while sophomore utility Sam Keightley, freshman driver Aron Sarfalvi, seniors Mitchell Keightley, Louis Fehrensen andPeter Kolos Kohári, and junior Austin Hexter also registered goals on the scoresheet. 

“I thought our guys showed where we are right now and how we need to work on. It’s good to see that the intensity was there,” SJSU head coach Gabor Sarusi said.

Harvard freshman Clay Carrington led the Crimson with 3 goals, accounting for nearly half of Harvard’s 8 goals.

The Spartans will  continue the Aggie Roundup at 3 p.m. against the University of California, Berkley.
