San Jose State women’s volleyball was swept 3-0 by Weber State University at the Wildcat Invitational on Saturday, despite the team’s best efforts.
The Spartans struggled with serve-receive, leading to predictable offensive plays that couldn’t score, costing the win.
Big numbers were put up by sophomore outside hitter Morgan Graves, who hit .286% with 5 kills and 1 error on 14 swings and was the leading force of the Spartans’ fight late in the third set.
However, it was the Wildcats’ block that continued to come out on top, putting up 11 blocks and adding pressure to the Spartans’ attackers that ultimately forced hitting errors, leading to a .130% team hitting average.
In addition, the Spartans struggled to contain the standout freshman Alexis Carlson, an outside hitter who hit .483% on 29 swings, with 17 kills and only 3 errors, in her second collegiate game.
Late in the third set, the Spartans put up a 7-3 run, clicking offensively and putting pressure on their opponents. But they struggled to convert defensively, allowing the Wildcats to ultimately ran away with the game.
“We came out really flat, which was disappointing,” SJSU head coach Todd Kress said. “We just made errors down the stretch, much as we did yesterday.”
This loss puts the Spartans at 0-2 to start the season after they were reverse-swept in their first game against the Belmont Bruins on Aug. 28.
The Spartans will continue to play in the Wildcat Invitational, going head-to-head against San Francisco State at 10 a.m. Sunday in Ogden, Utah.
