The San Jose State women’s volleyball lost to the Belmont University Bruins 3-2 in Ogden, Utah, for the Wildcat Invitational on Friday.
The Spartans started strong, winning the first two sets, 25-19 and 25-18, but couldn’t finish it, with Belmont winning the next three.
Belmont stayed in the game by winning the third set 25-18. The last two sets came close, with Belmont winning 25-23 in the fourth set and 15-12 in the fifth.
The fourth set was a battle, with two teams fighting for the lead. The Spartans were up by two until Belmont tied it up 12-12.
After going back and forth in scoring, Belmont managed to keep its lead by two all the way to win the set. This was the Spartans’ best chance of winning the game.
Belmont’s senior outside hitters Brenna Kauffeld and Connie Kofoed led their team in their comeback win, with each totaling 14 kills. Sophomore setter Jordan Czajkowski totaled 46 assists.
The Spartans couldn’t keep their momentum going into the third set. Their hitting percentage dropped to .094 compared with the .420 average from the first two sets.
Graduate student outside hitter Zuzana Kosíková was the lead hitter for the Spartans, totaling 16 kills. Sophomore right-side hitter Tatiana Robinson followed with 14 kills, and senior setter Fatimah Hall totaled 33 assists.
SJSU will play two more games in the Wildcat Invitational. They will face the hosts, Weber State, and Bay Area neighbor University of San Francisco.
SJSU will play against Weber State at 12:30 p.m. Saturday in Ogden, Utah.
