San Jose State women’s soccer (2-8-2, 1-4-0 MW) was shut out by Colorado College (6-4-4, 4-0-1 MW) in a 2-0 loss Sunday at the Spartan Soccer Complex in San Jose, Calif.
The Tigers dominated with an opening goal in the fourth minute with a header by sophomore defender Taylor Mentink off a corner kick taken by junior defender Charlotte Strabel.
The second goal scorer had a familiar last name for Spartan fans. Senior midfielder Kendall Memoly scored in the ninth minute after a save by junior goalkeeper Paige Fry that redirected the ball and landed in front of the goal line.
Kendall Memoly found moments where she matched up against her sister, SJSU junior defender Charlotte Memoly, in the attacking third.
“It was the first time we’ve done that in college, so it was super fun,” Charlotte Memoly said. “We battled and kept it clean, but it was definitely very entertaining for my family in the stands.”
Colorado College entered the game in first place in the Mountain West Conference and remains undefeated in conference play. The Spartans’ defense managed to keep the Tigers scoreless for the remainder of the game after the two early goals.
“After [the two goals], we really stepped up to their level. We outshot them, and I honestly feel like we outplayed them,” Charlotte Memoly said. “We were connecting our passes and we just needed to finish our chances at the end. But I’m just happy that we had a lot of shots and we were connecting.”
Offensively, the Spartans totaled 18 shots, with 13 from the second half and 6 on frame. The Tigers totaled 6 shots, with 2 of their 3 shots on frame.
“We were playing good soccer towards the end. It just goes to show how far this program has come,” Fry said. “We just needed to come out stronger. I need to come out stronger.”
There were changes at the right back position for the Spartans’ defense. Three different players played right back, which gave freshman defender Fana-Sally Ndiaye the opportunity to make her first appearance for SJSU.
“Aria [Burrola] was tired. She was one of the players who have been playing a lot of minutes as a freshman,” SJSU head coach Sonia Curvelo said. “It gave us a chance to see how Fana did too. I thought she adjusted well, and also Elizabeth [Ortega] as well.”
The Spartans will go up against the University of Hawai’i at Mānoa at 7 p.m. Thursday at Spartan Soccer Complex in San Jose, Calif.
