SJSU softball (8-13, 0-0 MW) brings home a close victory after winning 2-1 over the University of Rhode Island.

Coming into the matchup, the Spartans dropped six out of their last seven competitions, with one of those losses coming earlier in the day after a 3-1 defeat to the UC Davis Aggies.

The Spartans jumped out to an early lead behind redshirt junior infielder Karizma Bergesen‘s RBI sacrifice fly in the bottom of the first, bringing redshirt senior infielder Alyssa Graham across home plate.

But as the game continued, both teams displayed their defensive strengths, allowing three hits a piece, with Bergesen being responsible for every run scored for the Spartans.

After her first-inning sac fly, Bergesen followed that up with another score in the sixth inning behind an redshirt junior utility player Arianna Miranda double to bring in the second run to bring the lead to 2-0.

Rhode Island tried to make a run at a comeback when graduate student infielder Elena Gonzalez scored behind freshman infielder Becca Zawistowski’s fielders choice single.

But sophomore pitcher Lacie Ham would end the Rams’ chance after retiring three batters, two who grounded out and another who fouled out. Ham has two saves on the season to go with her three wins.

SJSU softball continues its season today at 2:30 p.m., taking on Cal State Northridge (6-12, 0-0 BW).
