SJSU gymnastics (11-2, 8-0 MPSF) suffered its second loss after a third-place behind #22 Southern Utah and #24 Iowa in its final regular season meet.
In their last two meets against Southern Utah the Spartans have come out as winners, with their most recent victory ending 196.175-195.250.
However, a San Jose State win streak coming to an end shouldn’t be seen as a negative.
Underclassman Kyra Cato, Madison Kirsch, and Michaela Gentry showcased what SJSU gymnastics has in store for the future.
Firstly, Cato carved out 9.900 on the beam and has been a consistent go-to all season long. Since receiving a low score of 8.250 back against Air Force on Jan. 16, Cato has scored at least 9.650.
Kirsch is another bright spot as she only scored below 9.000 twice this season. Friday, she led the team with the highest score of 9.875 on the vault.
Lastly, Gentry is a huge asset for the Spartans, finishing Friday’s competition with a 9.800 on vault and 9.700 on her floor routine.
Since the season’s first match at Stanford where Gentry scored a 9.525 on the vault, Gentry has consistently provided SJSU gymnastics with the spark it needs, scoring no lower than this mark since.
Junior Lauren Macpherson scored a 39.125 on the night, only after writing her name in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation record books as the all-time all-around record holder behind a 39.550 performance last Friday.
Behind last week’s two outstanding performances, Macpherson earned her tenth MPSF gymnast of the week award, her fifth of the year.
Following this meet, San Jose State prepares to compete in the MPSF championship, where they will compete for the crown of the top team in the conference.
The MPSF conference championship takes place at Air Force, beginning at 2 p.m.
