SJSU women’s tennis (3-3) awarded CSU Fullerton (3-1) its first loss of the season in a fiery match that ended in a 4-0 sweep.

After a week of rainy weather conditions and game postponements, the sun finally emerged and the team was able to begin its four-game homestand.

Thursday’s doubles matches against UC Davis finished with underwhelming results.

However, after a two-game drought without winning doubles, the team was awarded the point after a tremendous performance ending in 3-0.

Fifth-year Alba Pedrero Galindo and Senior Lara Marco Mas graced the court today and clinched the point in doubles. The duo boasts the best overall record (4-2) on the team. Junior Carolina Millan and Sophomore Olaya Iglesias finished first and dominated their opponents with a 6-1 win.

As the sun made its descent, the team was prepared to seal the deal.

With a 1-0 lead, Junior Irena Muradyan had a fire lit beneath her feet. Muradyan started strong and bested her opponent in just two swift sets. She was the first singles match to finish and held her opponent to no more than three successful games (6-3, 6-0). With this dub, Muradyan leads the team in overall singles wins (9-4).

Her teammates, Junior Jovana Babic and Senior Rozalina Youseva, performed with the same fierceness. Babic finished second (6-2, 6-0) and both matches ended in two sets.

Youseva’s singles dub (6-1, 6-1) clinched the game for the team and awarded her seven total singles wins. The game ended 4-0 and the Spartans now had a 3-3 record under their belt.

Head Coach Chad Skorupa reflected on the successful win with some notes on improvement.

“We gotta come out, a little quicker start both with doubles and singles,” Skorupka said. “We gotta get a little bit more ferocious out there.”

SJSU (3-3) will look forward to adding to their win streak and challenge Grand Canyon University (1-5) at home on Friday, Feb. 17 at 12 p.m.
