SJSU women’s water polo (2-9) opened the UC Davis tournament with back-to-back losses Saturday afternoon against Pacific 10-7 and UC Davis 9-7.
They opened against a hot No.11 Pacific team who won five straight coming into the match.
The game was close with there never being a deficit of more than three, but the Spartans could not capture the lead.
SJSU trailed 6-3 in the third quarter until three different Spartans scored to tie the game at six.
Unfortunately, their magic ran out as they then conceded four consecutive goals giving sophomore Hila Futorian their third of the day.
The Spartans had more shots and won the exclusion battle, but it was not enough to steal a win.
There was a goalie goal in this one as SJSU keeper Hannah Henry scored their second of the season.
A sloppy start never allowed the Spartans to comeback in their second game of the day against host school No. 17 UC Davis.
Six turnovers in the first quarter resulted in four Aggie goals less than five minutes into the match.
Utility player Olga Descalzi scored for SJSU inbetween those four to make it 4-1 at the end of one.
While Spartas scored two goals in each of the three remaining quarters, UC Davis had enough of a cushion to ward off any Spartan surges.
Descalzi and sophomore Maiken Pardon each scored three goals today to lead the Spartans. The team has still yet to score double-digit goals this season.
They look to break their eight-game losing streak on the second day of the tournament. On Sunday, they play Cal Baptist first at 10:30 a.m. and end the day with CSU-Monterey Bay at 2:10 p.m.
