San José State softball (15-16, 4-3 MW) had a 2-0 win over Fresno State (20-11, 5-2 MW) on Thursday night at Margie Wright Diamond in Fresno to open the three-game Mountain West series behind a dominant complete-game shutout from right-handed pitcher Mia Reynolds and a pair of clutch RBIs from right fielder Carly Cummings.

Reynolds was in complete control from start to finish, tossing her seventh complete game and fourth shutout of the season, allowing just six hits while striking out four and walking two across seven scoreless innings. It marked her second straight complete game and ninth win of the year, solidifying her role as the Spartans’ ace.

“Mia did an awesome job on the mound and kept us in the game,” SJSU head coach Tammy Lohmann said. “Our defense was solid behind her. We had a couple of big double plays and made all the routine plays.”

The Spartans struck first in the top of the second when a pitch hit shortstop Ahmiya Noriega and later came around to score on an RBI single to right field from Cummings.

At the top of the seventh, Cummings excelled in intelligent baserunning, ensuring victory. She ended the game 2-for-3 at bat, matching her career highs in hits and RBIs, and achieved her second multi-hit game.

“Carly came up big with two hits that gave us both of our runs,” Lohmann said. “We just played together, played hard, and left everything on the field.”

SJSU infielder Jules Ronquillo added the only other hit for San José State, going 1-for-3 at bat. The Spartans played flawless defense and turned a key double play in the fifth inning to erase a Fresno State threat.

Although the Bulldogs outhit the Spartans 6-3, they could not capitalize, stranding six runners on base and failing to push a run across.
