SJSU women’s tennis (2-3) returned to the court today and defeated UC Davis (1-5) in a 5-2 dub.

Junior Carolina Millan sealed the deal with a tiebreaker victory. With Millan’s first year at SJSU, this match has already boosted her six singles wins.

The afternoon began with doubles. After the last game’s disappointing doubles sweep against Sacramento State, the team sought better results.

However, the team was served an early blow.

Senior Lara Marco Mas failed to add to their eight overall doubles victories. The recent Mountain West Player of the Week was partnered with fifth-year Alba Pedrero Galindo, but they fell to their opponents in a 6-3 upset. The accomplished pair have three overall set wins together.

SJSU was down 0-1 without the doubles point. Despite the losing score, the team reassessed and delivered stunning performances in their singles matches. They won all but one singles match.

Senior Rozalina Youseva won both sets (2-0), awarding Youseva an early win. Junior Irena Muradyan, who leads the team in singles victories, claimed their eighth win after dominating in her last two sets (1-2).

Other singles win include juniors Jovana Babic and Galindo, who both garner five singles victories in total.

“It was a tight match,” Skorupka said. “Junior transfer Carolina Millan clinched the match for us in the third set, but it was a great team victory.”

SJSU women’s tennis received a much-needed win and shied away from a losing streak. The team returns for its first home game of the season and will challenge Cal State Fullerton on Saturday, Feb. 11 at 12 p.m.
