SJSU women’s tennis (1-3) suffered a grueling upset that awarded Sacramento State (1-1) its first win of the season.

After a commandeering performance against Hawaii Pacific last weekend, the Spartans were looking to spark a winning streak.

The afternoon kicked off with doubles, resulting in a complete sweep by Sacramento State.

Junior Carolina Millan and Lara Marco Mas faltered in their match. Mas, a Senior, was named the Mountain West Player of the Week on Jan. 25. Despite the title, the duo suffered a 6-4 loss. Their teammates failed to secure a doubles win as well.

However, SJSU women’s tennis drew first blood in singles. Junior Jovana Babic emerged as the dominant force in her first set 6-0. By sealing the deal in her second set 6-2, she granted SJSU their first success of the day.

Junior Irena Muradyan and Fifth Year Alba Pedrero Galindo both won their matches. Muradyan led both of her sets and Galindo met the same fate.

The first half of singles showed signs of improvement, but the second half’s matches failed to deliver.

Millan persisted in her first set, resulting in a 7-6 deficit. But her second set ended in a disappointing 6-1.

Junior Raquel Villan Pereira‘s match proceeded to a tiebreak. By the end of the hard-fought match, Pereira emerged empty-handed.

Mas was evenly matched, each competitor winning one set apiece. Mas was defeated in her third set after a 6-0 blow.

The SJSU women’s tennis team has started the season with an overall record of 1-3.

The Spartans will seek redemption in next week’s match against UC Davis at Davis on Friday, Feb. 8, at 5 p.m.
