SJSU women’s basketball (3 – 21, 1-12 MW) fell 80-55 to San Diego State (20-7, 10-4 MW) at the Provident Credit Union Event Center on Saturday afternoon.
Two SJSU players finished the game with double digits in scoring.
Holland provided a game-high 19 points, four rebounds, two steals but also recorded six turnovers.
Fifth-year senior guard Aarion Nichols finished with 11 points and a team-high seven rebounds.
This is the sixth time SJSU women’s basketball has lost by 20 points or more and the second blowout loss to the Aztecs this season.
The Spartans’ offense struggled to get anything going as they shot an inefficient 37.3% from the field over the course of the game.
San Diego State stormed to a 20-12 lead as senior guard Sophia Ramos made a 3-pointer to end the first quarter.
The Spartans struggled in the second quarter, only making one of their last eight shots from the field, and trailed 35-24 at the end of the first half.
Holland led SJSU with nine points, two assists, and two steals at the intermission.
The Aztecs extended their lead to 55-33 after making seven of their first eight shots with 3:29 left in the third quarter.
SJSU made six of their last seven shots and cut its deficit to 62-46 at the end of the third.
The Spartans then went ice-cold in the fourth quarter, shooting 4-15 while the Aztecs shot 4-8 from the field and went 8-10 from the free-throw line as they triumphed 80-55.
For us to come out and be the team we were against Colorado State and then show up as we did today is really just a learning curve,” said head coach April Phillips. “It’s obviously disappointing, but. . . we’ll come back and be a better version of ourselves moving forward.”
SJSU women’s basketball looks to break out its five-game losing streak when it heads to Las Vegas, NV to face UNLV next Thursday at 6:30 p.m.
