Third quarter burst not enough for Spartans in loss at Sacramento State

San Jose State’s women’s basketball (1-2) fell 75-65 to Sacramento State (1-1) after an 18-point lead in the third quarter.

The Spartans lead the scoreboard six different times, going back-and-forth with the Hornets.

At the end of the buzzer, SJSU trailed 33-31 at halftime.

After halftime, the Spartans put up 27 points in the third quarter leading the game 58-45.

It didn’t take long for the Hornets to claw their way back in the final and rally back in the last seven minutes of the game outscoring the Spartans in the final score 75-65.

Although SJSU returned home with a loss, senior forward Cyndi Lewis recorded her first double double this season.

She put up 14 points and 12 rebounds.

Sophomore guard Ellie Boni led the Spartans with 15 points, along with seven rebounds, four assists and two steals.

SJSU shot 60% from the field and 43% from the three in the third frame.

The Spartans will take a few days off before hosting their home opener on Wednesday against Santa Clara.
