Two Spartans given preseason CFB honors

With college football officially in “preseason prediction” season, San Jose State wide receiver Tre Walker and kicker Matt Mercurio are among the names in the discussion.

Walker was named to the Mountain West’s preseason all-conference team on Wednesday. The senior had one of the most productive receiving seasons in Spartan history, catching 79 passes for 1,161 yards in only 10 games of action.

He’s also on the watchlists for 2020’s Biletnikoff Award and Maxwell Award. The Biletnikoff Award is given to the Division I’s best wide receiver, while the Maxwell is for the college “player of the year.”

Mercurio was named to the Lou Groza Award’s annual watchlist, which honors the season’s best D-I place-kicker. Mercurio converted 83 percent of his field goals last season, including a streak of 16 straight makes over a six game stretch.

Last season the pair were an essential part of SJSU doubling their total wins under Brent Brennan. If the Spartans make another jump this season, expect more awards to come to San Jose.
