SJSU Club Sports Postponed to Spring Semester

With classes expected to start in less than a month, there is a question mark that hangs over the future of fall sports on college campuses.

According to an article published by San Jose State hockey, club sports that typically begin in the fall, will tentatively start in the spring semester.

SJSU club sports director Winston Adams told the club hockey team over a Zoom call that he was going to make that decision. There was little surprise but slight disappointment from the team.

“I really liked when the Ivy League jumped out and said it is going to wait,” Adams said. “I appreciate their leadership at the collegiate level.”

Adams mentioned that there were no implications toward which guidelines he must follow and enforce. So, he decided to make the safe and sizable decision himself.

“I felt the need to do something ,” Adams said. “The situation wasn’t changing quickly enough. It felt best to play it safe before it got to late, I wanted to give students enough time to plan accordingly.”

Senior defenseman Ryan Ellis was looking forward to getting on the ice in September, but is not surprised about the decision.

“I know that school being online and businesses being closed are crucial to safety and the last thing on people’s mind is hockey,” Ellis said.

Ellis mentioned that there are plans to get back to practice later in the fall. For now, he enjoys checking in with the team and staff on the bi-weekly Zoom meetings.

There was hope during the summer months that club sports would be able to start on time, but the risks of travel and spreading the Coronavirus remain too high.
