Tuite: SJSU planning to bring sports back in fall

San Jose State will be looking to bring athletics back in the fall season, athletic director Marie Tuite said in a radio interview on Monday.

Tuite was a guest on KNBR’s “KNBR Tonight With Mark Willard” to discuss last week’s announcement by California State University chancellor Timothy White, that classes in fall will be delivered primarily online.

“I believe that we’re going to have fall sports,” Tuite said. “May not be many spectators in the stands, but we’re planning — with our campus being open — that we will have fall competitions.”

This follows a similar statement that San Diego State University athletic director John David Wicker made to the Associated Press on Sunday.

As states continue to navigate the process of re-opening from the COVID-19 pandemic, the fate of college sports — primarily college football — has been especially uneasy since White’s announcement last week.

Three CSU schools — SJSU, SDSU and Fresno State University — have football teams in the FBS’ Mountain West.

But the Spartans’ plans have Power 5 implications as well.

SJSU is scheduled to face Penn State on Sept. 19. If the Spartans were to cancel sports for the fall, the Nittany Lions would likely have to scramble to find a replacement.

For now, Tuite says SJSU plans to have their football team return to San Jose in July with social distancing and testing measures in place.

The Spear will continue to update the story as more information is made available.
