Close, but just short.
San Jose State men’s water polo (7-17) took a tough 11-10 loss against Santa Clara University (14-11).
The Broncos are now on a three-game winning streak and have won six of their last seven games.
The Spartans are on a four-game losing streak and have not won a game since their overtime game against Bucknell at the Julian Fraser Memorial Tournament.
The two teams were neck and neck the whole game. SCU’s first goal was off a penalty shot, but SJSU’s sophomore driver Ary Kamen answered back with his own goal a minute later.
It would be Kamen’s only goal off of five shots.
With less than a minute in the first period, SJSU would tie up the game 3-3.
In each of the next two periods, SCU would outscore SJSU by just one. And with that, the Spartans’ two goals in the fourth period wouldn’t be enough.
Sophomore goalie Yahav Fire was awarded the loss as he had 13 saves and 11 goals allowed and received the only yellow card of the game.
The Spartans were able to get the edge in shots by outshooting the Broncos 36-31 but were beat in steals 5-1.
SJSU has its last game of the season at home on Saturday against Pacific at noon.
