San Jose State (4-7-3, 2-3-1 MW) went into double overtime against University of Nevada-Las Vegas (4-10-0, 1-5-0 MW) ended with a tie, 1-1.
The Spartans’ offensive was aggressive to Rebel’s goalie Emberyly Sevilla right from the start. At the eighth minute, senior defender Kristen Amerikwa headed the ball into the game, assisted by junior midfielder Darrian Reed, 1-0.
“My run was on in the box,” Reed said. “Jenny saw me early and I just connected my head with it.
The first half goes silent after the goal. The Rebels were unable to answer the goal in the first half.
The second half gets on the way with both teams going up and down the field, taking their shots on the goalies. UNLV scored a goal 10 minutes into the second half, 1-1.
Neither team backed down from each other in the second half. A yellow card was given to junior defender Lauola Amanoni. However, this didn’t stop the Spartans’ momentum in the game.
In the second half, there were three penalty kicks against sophomore goalkeeper Ariana Romero. She was able to save all three shots alongside her team. Romero had a total of 10 saves throughout the game, a new season high.
“Ari had a great game,” said head coach Lauren Hanson. “She did a great job in the goal for us.”
The drive of both teams sent the game into double overtime, where neither was able to produce a goal, leaving the field tied 1-1.
“We gotta stay lively and keep mindset for the entire 90,” hanson said. “And that’s the lesson we learned today.”
The Spartans will be thinking pink against University of Nevada (3-11, 2-5 MW) at noon Oct. 20.
