The University of Nevada Las Vegas women’s volleyball team took care of business, sweeping San Jose State Thursday night.
The Lady Rebels came to The Bay looking to steal an away game and they did just that.
This win for the Rebels spoiled the Spartans’ moment, since they had just snapped a six-game losing streak against the Air Force on Oct. 12.
While the Rebels dominated throughout the night with their overall kill and hit percentages, the Spartans’ defense was keeping the game alive.
The Spartans’ had a total of 48 digs with the Rebels barely ahead at 51. Sarah Smevog led the Spartans with a total of 21, which was significantly higher than any of the other players on her side of the net.
While the Spartans came to the court with a strong defensive mindset, the offense did not match. The Rebels dominated.
The Rebels led in kills 41-28 and hitting percentage .314-.049.
Hayden Mariena led the Rebels with a total of 15 kills, making it clear that she was their main source of offensive play throughout the game.
The Spartans struggled with their offense throughout the game. Haylee Nelson led them that night with a total of 8 kills. Makayla Lewis and Fernanda Vido followed shortly behind with 6 kills each.
Interestingly, both teams had the same statistics in total assists. Lauryn Burt and Antonette Rolda lead the Rebels in assists with a total of 17 each. Mamie Garard lead the Spartans with a total of 17 assists.
Ultimately this game came down to the offense. Both teams performed at almost the same level defensively, but the Rebels completely surpassed the Spartans offensively. This is what allowed them to beat them in the first match 25-18, then in the second match 25-14 and the final match 25-17.
The Spartans will look to rebound from the loss at home Saturday as they take on the New Mexico Lobos at noon.
