San Jose State football’s offseason kicked off with its first week of practice. While the offense faces key questions as the Spartans aim to fill in voids, the defense was crucial last season and continues to be a strong point heading into the new year.

The defense forced 28 turnovers with 21 interceptions in 2024. This performance ranked first in the Mountain West Conference and sixth nationally in interceptions.

Defense coordinator Derrick Odum shared insights on the defense’s early performance after the first day in pads, highlighting their energetic approach.

“Today was our first day in pads. We’ll review the film, but the guys showed great energy. There’ll be mistakes, but it was a solid start,” Odum said. “Creating turnovers was outstanding. It gives us a chance to win. We’ll focus on improving third downs and building on last season’s positives.”

DJ Harvey’s departured to USC, Michael Dansby’s departured to Arizona  and Amir Wallace’s graduated, all three cornerbacks combined for seven interceptions last season. According to Odum, defensive back Runye Norton from El Camino College and Utah transfer defensive lineman Vili Taufatofua have already made significant contributions. With the blend of veterans and newcomers, the defense continues to seek its rhythm.

“We have some new faces, and though it’s early, there are positive signs,” Odum said.

Head coach Ken Niumatalolo supported this, praising the defense for growing early in practice.

“They did well in getting turnovers, providing our offense with extra opportunities,” Niumatalolo said. “Competition in the secondary is strong and players like Kejuan Bullard are stepping up.”

As spring practices progress, the defense focuses on key goals: creating turnovers, enhancing third-down efficiency, and integrating new players.

“We’re making progress, but there’s more to do. I like what I see, especially today,” Niumatalolo said.

With time left in practice, the Spartans are taking it step by step, focusing on consistent improvement.

“We’re not looking too far ahead; we’re focused on stacking good days,” Odum stated.
