The San Jose State women’s soccer team (4-6-2, 2-2 MW) snagged a 1-0 conference win at home against Utah State (6-5-1, 1-2-1 MW).

The lone goal came from freshman midfielder Sabrina Weinman on a penalty kick in the 72nd minute.

The Spartans were also able to secure the win with an impressive performance by sophomore goalkeeper Ariana Romero, who received a yellow card in the 88th minute.

Her yellow card and other fouls in the second half signified the game’s change of pace.

The two teams combined for 12 fouls in the latter half of the game. The first half saw only seven.

“I thought it was more of a feisty game, obviously both teams competing to get the win today,” said head coach Lauren Hanson. “Our team did a really good job of staying composed even with the penalties against us.”

The match was a battle until the very end. Utah State stepped up their game and had nine shots in the second half.

Both teams ended the game with 13 shots, but the Aggies’ miscues and the Spartans’ defense ultimately gave SJSU the edge and a shutout.

“We pride ourselves in our defense,” senior defender Kristen Amarikwa said. “Everybody almost sacrificing their bodies to keep that ball out of the back of the net.”

It was the second conference win of the season for the Spartans.

After a needed home win, they hit the road to play the University of Wyoming Friday at 2 p.m.
