After a two-game winning streak, the San Jose State men’s soccer team (2-8-0, 2-1 WAC) lost a heated battle 3-2 to Houston Baptist University (3-6-0, 1-2 WAC)

Junior midfielder Nicolas Brenes netted a goal early for the Spartans, but the Huskies knotted the game up by the 20th minute.

Just before halftime HBU scored again and took a 2-1 lead.

In the 60th minute, junior forward Rudy Castro scored the tying goal, which gave the Spartans life.

However, their uptick would be short-lived. Just three minutes into overtime the Huskies scored their golden goal to win the game.

As HBU rushed the field the Spartans walked off with drooped heads.

“As usual we’re gonna dominate most possessions, we’re gonna have more have more shots than most teams and create more chances,” head coach Simon Tobin said. “But our ratio of giving goals away to chance is not good.”

In the second half, three Spartan shots hit the goal post and a few crosses from the right side went unfinished.

SJSU had 24 shots in the game, 16 of which came in the second half and zero in overtime. They also had nine corner kicks in the game.

Although the Spartans dominated the stat sheet , the game was heated all the way through.

In the 31st minute, junior midfielder Max Allen was dealt a yellow card and later in the match got in the face of the head referee.

“The first thing that came to my mind was to calm him down,” said Brenes. “He’s a key player that we need … you know he’s a hot head so we just needed to calm him down, because if not he’s gonna get out.”

The Spartans hit the road for their next three games and Tobin mentioned if they wanted to contend, they would have to win at least two of the away games.

The Spartans take on Grand Canyon University on Friday at 7 p.m.
