SJSU women’s tennis seeks improvement in second tournament of the season

In the second tournament of the season, San Jose State women’s tennis played strong in doubles and singles at St. Mary’s University from Friday to Sunday. 

On the first day of the invitational, SJSU doubles pairings junior Laura Malsert and sophomore Alba Pedrero Galindo won their match, 8-4 over Santa Clara University. 

Malsert and Pedrero Galindo won their second doubles matches over St. Mary’s, 8-6. 

Doubles pairings junior Savannah Sendar and freshman Rosalina Youseva dropped their match, 8-2. 

Youseva went into three sets for the Spartans where she faced Santa Clara opponent and won 6-3, 4-6, 6-4 during singles.

Sendar, freshman Lara Marco Mas and junior Klara Milojkovic all won their singles matches for the day.

On the second day of the invitational, Youseva remained unbeaten in both of the singles matches. 

She went into a tiebreaker in the last set against her UC Berkeley opponent 2-6, 6-3, 7-6 and finished strong in her match against rival University of San Francisco 6-4, 1-6, 6-1. 

These two matches helped her advance to the championship semifinal in the singles group for the tournament. 

Marco Mas and Sendar won in doubles, 8-2 over Sacramento State. 

Senior Tamara Culibrk and Youseva won their set, 8-5 in doubles. 

Overall, SJSU won seven singles and three doubles closing out the second day. 

For the final day of the invitational, Pedrero Galindo, Sendar and Milojkovic all completed singles wins.

Pedrero Galindo completed 2 sets to win over her USF opponent 6-3, 6-4. 

Youseva, Malsert and Culibrk dropped their singles matches. 

All of the Spartans fell in doubles closing out the tournament. 

Up next, SJSU will head to Stanford for the ITA Northwest Regional Championships on Friday, October 18.
