After starting match play with the No. 2 seed, San Jose State women’s golf finished in sixth place at the Lamkin Invitational in Rancho Santa Fe Springs, Calif.
Freshman Natasha Andrea Oon and senior Abegail Arevalo led the Spartans by each shooting an even-par 72. This contributed to the team shooting a 300 in stroke play, which gave them the No. 2 seed out 12 teams for match play.
SJSU lost in its first match up against No. 7 seed UC Berkeley Monday. Oon and senior Franziska Friedrich scored the only two points for the Spartans in the 3-2 loss.
Friedrich managed to defeat her opponent at hole 15, but Oon played a back-and-forth match all the way to the last hole and came out on top by one point.
The next day brought up a match against UC Irvine, where both teams tied 2.5-2.5. As far as the bracket, SJSU took the victory through individual matches and put them in fifth for Day 3.
Oon killed it again in her match by getting nine consecutive pars right from the start. She went on to get two more, along with three birdies, to secure her victory over UCI’s Sienna Lyford.
The other Spartan win came from Arevalo, who also dominated on the course and finished early at hole 13.
On Wednesday, the Spartans went against the original No. 1 seed Pepperdine. They were able to take two points, thanks to redshirt freshman Maddie White and Arevalo, but it was not enough to for the win.
SJSU fell 3-2 and settled for a sixth-place finish.
Up next, the team will compete in the Silverado Showdown starting on Sunday, Apr. 7 in Napa.
