Errors lead baseball to drop doubleheader at Michigan

San Jose State baseball (14-11, 2-1 MW) struggled at the plate as it lost both games in the doubleheader against University of Michigan (16-7) in a non-conference matchup.

The Spartans were shut out twice and committed four critical errors combined in the two-game series.

Due to a scheduling change, the series opener for Tuesday was moved to Wednesday and both games were shortened to seven-inning contests.

Freshman left-hander pitcher Ben Polack dominated on the hill for the Spartans in Game 1. He was able to last through six innings and only allowed one run on four hits.

The lone run of the game came in in the sixth inning.

Michigan’s junior outfielder Jordan Brewer hit a sacrifice fly to right field that allowed sophomore outfielder Jesse Franklin to cross the plate.

The Spartans were able to hold their own defensively in Game 1, but were unable to create the offensive spark that would’ve been essential to their success.

In Game 2, sophomore Connor Konishi took the mound for SJSU. He pitched three shut-out innings without giving up a hit — until the fourth inning.

The Wolverines were able to unleash their offense as they scored all three of their runs in the fourth.

Sophomore infielder Jack Blomgren doubled to left center that resulted in bringing in two UM players across the plate.

To solidify the win, senior outfielder Miles Lewis singled to bring in Brewer.

Similar to Game 1, the Spartan offense was not able to find the spark and the team fell 3-0.

The Spartans will travel to Illinois to take on Northwestern University for another non-conference matchup.

First pitch will be at 10:30 a.m.
