Spartans collide with Wolf Pack in first round of MW tournament

San Jose State women’s basketball (6-23, 5-13 MW) will face University of Nevada (11-18, 7-11 MW) in the first round of the Mountain West Conference tournament in Las Vegas.

The Spartans earned the No. 9 seed while their opponents finished as the No. 8 seed.

SJSU is coming off of a pivotal conference win against its rival Fresno State, and will look to carry the winning momentum over into thw opening round of the tournament.

One component the Spartans will need to focus on is outside shooting. As a team, the Wolf Pack holds a 28.8 3-point shooting percentage, while allowing their opponents to shoot 32 percent.

Sophomore and junior guards Megan Anderson and Analyss Benally will look to continue sinking 3’s.

In SJSU’s last conference victory, Anderson lit up the court with 6 3-pointers. Her performance solidified a new sophomore record at San Jose State with 61 made 3’s.

The Spartans will need to be aware of Nevada senior guard Jade Redmon. She has scored a total of 381 points on the season, averaging about 14.7 points per game.

Redmon is a key component to the Wolf Pack offense that will need to be shut down by the Spartan defense.

Senior forward Terae Briggs is another name for the defense to watch out for as she leads her team averaging 7.7 rebounds PG.

Having won four out of their last six games, the Spartans will look to continue the momentum into Las Vegas.

Tip-off is scheduled for 2 p.m. at the Thomas & Mack Center.
