San Jose State softball (11-9) put together an impressive game Sunday, picking up the 8-0 mercy–rule victory over Weber State (4-14) at Spartan Stadium.
Because of timely hitting and reliable pitching, the Spartans strung together 14 hits in just five innings of play and did not commit a single error.
Freshman pitcher Jenessa Ullegue was extremely effective in the circle. She gave up no earned runs and struck out five batters in her five innings of work.
Ullegue was also a key contributor at the plate for the Spartans as she was 3-for-3 on the day and scored twice.
Three out of the five innings played were defensive showcases, but the Spartans put up four runs in the second and fifth innings.
Senior catcher Alyssa Avila had herself a day. She went 3-for-3 and knocked in 3 RBIs for SJSU.
Weber State had opportunities but would fail to execute late in innings as it left seven base runners in this matchup.
The story of the game was the Spartans’ ability to have quality plate appearances as they went 14-for-27 as a team — good for a .519 batting average.
SJSU vastly improved in the areas of hits and strikeouts compared to its first game on Sunday against Cal State Northridge.
In the 12-1 loss against CSUN, the Spartans struck out 10 times while only having 2 base hits. Against the Wildcats, however, they had only 1 strikeout and 14 hits.
Softball’s next game will be against Bucknell on Tuesday at 7 p.m. at Spartan Stadium.
