Behind extremely hot shooting from Fresno State, San Jose State (4-26, 1-17 MW) men’s basketball took a rough 121-81 loss Saturday in the Save Mart Center.
The Spartans went back-and-forth with the Bulldogs (22-8, 13-5 MW) for a large chunk of the first half. However, the Bulldogs proved they are third in the Mountain West for a reason.
FSU shot an impressive 60.5 percent from beyond the arc and 64.5 percent from the field overall.
The Bulldogs’ duo of senior guards Deshon Taylor and Braxton Huggins were the story of the game.
Taylor and Huggins both finished with career-highs in scoring — Taylor with 37 and Huggins with 34. Taylor also dished out 8 assists.
Junior guard Noah Blackwell also had himself a game with 25 points and 8 assists.
The Spartans found themselves in a 54-36 hole with about two minutes left in the second half and the Bulldogs would not let up.
At the half, SJSU would find itself down 19 points.
After the break, the Spartans would try to claw back into the game, but behind costly turnovers and consistent 3-point jumpers falling for the Bulldogs, the deficit would only grow larger.
The bright spots for SJSU in this matchup were that junior forward Michael Steadman had another quality game with 21 points and 9 boards. Freshman Seneca Knight showed flashes on his way to 15 points.
No. 11 seed San Jose State will face No. 6 seed Air Force in the first round of the Mountain West tournament in the Thomas and Mack Center in Las Vegas.
