Three-run sixth inning propel Spartans to series win

After waiting almost two hours for the rain to subside, San Jose State baseball came out victorious against Air Force Academy 3-2 to take the series.

The Spartans (9-5, 3-2 MW) scored three runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to come from behind and defeat the Falcons (6-5, 1-2 MW).

The game remained scoreless until the fifth. Freshman infielder Alexander Pup gave the AFA the 1-0 lead with an RBI single.

In the sixth, junior infielder Troy Viola grounded into what seemed to be a routine double play, but the AFA’s third baseman made a throwing error and allowed senior Aaron Pleschner to score and junior outfielder Kellen Strahm to reach third base.

The error continued to haunt the Falcons as junior catcher Johnny Mendoza then laid down a perfect sacrifice bunt, which scored Strahm from third and gave the Spartans a 2-1 lead.

Freshman James Shimashita then plated what would be the winning run via an RBI single to center field which scored Viola.

Senior right handed pitcher Tevin Cadola (2-0) was credited with the win after tossing six strong innings, allowing just one earned run and six hits.

The Falcons sophomore Luke Chilcutt was charged with the loss after giving up three runs in the sixth.

Freshman Jonathan Clark came in to relieve Cadola after the rain delay and quickly got out of the seventh inning facing only four batters.

Senior closer Fineas Del Bonta-Smith was bought in to the eighth inning and got the Spartans out of a jam and went on to close the game. Bonta-Smith was credited with his third save of the season as he faced five batters and allowed no hits.

SJSU will go for the three-game sweep Sunday at 11 a.m at Municipal Stadium.
