San Jose State softball’s (10-7) rally was stopped short in the bottom of the seventh inning and fell to UC Davis (15-4) on Friday, 6-5.
With powerful hits from the Aggies against senior pitcher Madison Aurin, they were able to take an early 2-0 lead.
In the bottom half, freshman infielder Arianna Miranda was driven in off an RBI single from sophomore infielder Rayohna Sagapolu and made it 2-1 Aggies.
Aggies senior third baseman Meghan Bradbury extended the lead with a solo shot to left to make it a two-run game.
With two crucial fielding errors in the top of the fourth, the Aggies put up three more runs to make it 6-1.
“I just thought we didn’t make the plays to get out of the game,” head coach Peter Turner said. “Made two errors that cost us the balance of the game.”
In the bottom of the fifth, freshman outfielder Jenessa Ullegue put the Spartans back in the game with a 2-RBI triple into the right field to make it 6-3. She would finish the game 2-for-3 with 3 RBIs.
“I feel a lot more confident in myself,” Ullegue said. “Lately I’ve been struggling and just getting those hits put me back into round.”
In the same inning, junior outfielder Kaelin Amrein singled in Ullegue to keep the rally going.
With three more outs, Ullegue made it a one-run game with an RBI double that plated freshman pinch runner Carley Morfey.
The momentum was short lived as UCD shut the door and handed SJSU the 6-5 loss.
SJSU continues the the Silicon Valley Classic II against Cal State Northridge (7-12) Saturday at 2 p.m.
