Spartans collapse late, fall to Air Force

In Saturday’s game against Air Force (7-12, 3-5 MWC), San Jose State (1-17, 0-7 MWC) had one of its best offensive performances of the season. The team shot 50 percent, and made 11-19 3-point attempts. It still wasn’t enough to end its losing streak, now up to 14.

SJSU held a 6-point lead going into the fourth, but fell apart in the final period. The Spartans built a lead as high as 9, but the Falcons outscored them 27-9 in the final eight minutes.

The Falcons got the home victory 88-77 behind an outstanding 30 points from sophomore guard Kaelin Immel. In 30 minutes of play she was 11-23 from the floor with five rebounds and five assists, with just two turnovers.

The dominant performance from Immel was enough to beat the Spartans despite one of their most impressive showings on the year. They had double digit scoring efforts from five players, including 14 each from Megan Anderson and Raziya Potter.

Potter was excellent, going 6-11 from the field with three rebounds and three steals, but only played 16 minutes due to foul trouble and a technical foul early on in the game. She would foul out in the final moments of the game.

Rebounding was a major difference in the game. The Falcons beat the Spartans 47-30 on the boards, and outscored them in second chance points 14-2.

With the loss, the Spartans are now 0-7 in Mountain West play, and have lost 14 in a row. They’ll try to change that on Wednesday when they host the Utah State Aggies in the Event Center at 7 p.m.
