San Jose State women’s tennis (1-0) opened up its season with a commanding non-conference victory over Sonoma State (0-0) on Friday, 6-1.
In the dual match, the Spartans won all three doubles matches and five of six singles matches.
“Every victory feels good. Being the first match, you don’t know where everybody is at,” said head coach Chad Skorupka. “I think we came out with a good start in doubles today and that was the key.”
Senior Miyo Kobayashi and freshman Alba Pedrero Galindo finished first with a clean 6-0 sweep over SSU’s Calrisa Colling and Jenna DeTurk.
Sophomore pair Laura Malsert and Savannah Sendar, and the pair of freshman Mathilda Vidgren and sophomore Klara Milojkovic, clinched their doubles matches 6-3 to earn the first point for SJSU.
“Getting the three doubles matches gave us a lot of confidence going into the singles,” Sendar said. “That was a really nice doubles point for us.”
The Spartans went on to take the next five of six singles matches. Pedrero Galindo at No. 1 singles defeated Jensyn Warren 7-5 and 6-2.
“It was my first match at San Jose State, so I was a little bit nervous,” she said. “When I was down, I tried to play more consistent and play the ball deeper. It was working and I finished the match.”
Milojkovic, Kobayashi, Sendar and Vidgren followed with singles wins of their own.
In a No. 4 singles match that came down to a tie breaking set, DeTurk defeated Malsert 6-7, 6-3, 1-0 (10-7) for Sonoma State’s first and only point of the day.
SJSU continues dual-match play on Sunday at 12 p.m. against Cal Poly at Spartan Tennis Complex.
