Sophomore Taylor Chan secured three titles as San Jose State gymnastics finished in second place in its home opener on Friday.
The Spartans completed the meet with 191.700 score as Air Force claimed first place at 193.775.
“This was a great environment to have a meet in,” said head coach Joanne Bowers. “We were disappointed in the way we started, but to be able to come back and finish strong … we were proud of that.”
SJSU started the meet on the vault. Chan lead the team with 9.750, which was good for third-best. Sophomore Chelsey Andrada followed at 9.650.
The Spartans moved onto the bars in the second rotation. Junior Stephanie Relova topped the squad with 9.750 and finished third overall.
San Jose State tallied 95.200 through two rotations.
“We really struggled tonight and we’ve done a lot better at our previous meets,” Relova said. “We’ve had a lot of trouble with injury this season, so we’re just trying to recover from that.”
Beam and floor proved to be San Jose State’s strongest rotations of the night. Chan finished first on the beam with a season-high 9.850.
She also tied her season-high on the floor for the third time in the year at 9.900. Chan eventually clinched the all-around title.
“It feels good to get a score like that and I worked hard for it,” she said. “We pulled it together on floor when we needed to and that got us second place.”
Alaska Anchorage placed third with 191.425, while Seattle Pacific finished fourth at 189.325.
The Spartans will stay home and host their next meet against UC Davis and Boise State on Friday at 7 p.m.
