Spartans record season-bests in two events, place second in Boise

With just one extra week of training, San Jose State gymnastics was able to improve by finishing second at its second meet of the season in Boise.

It was not a close meet by any means as host Boise State took first place by three points. Air Force took third place by two points.

The victory title going to Boise was due to the fact that San Jose State was unable to grab a first-place in any of the four events.

Junior Taylor Chan had one heck of a meet by leading the team in three events and obtaining a career best all-around score of 39.175. An accomplishment in itself was not enough to secure a top placing as she tied for second again in the all-around division.

The Spartan leader for the vault event was junior Chelsey Andrada with a score of 9.775.

The team had a strong start with bars and beam, recording season bests in both of the apparatuses.

Momentum dropped in the third rotation as the team suffered from a fall and injury on floor. A surprising turn as floor has proven to be a strong focus not only in practice but in scores as well.

Andrada was able to pick up the pace when it came to vault being the final rotation for the team. Freshman Carli Orcutt and Chan were able to record vault scores that were less than a point behind Andrada.

It looks like it’s still early in the season to work out all of the details that need to be focused on.

There was improvement shown in a week’s time and it’s important to keep in mind that all teams are getting better at the same time.

Boise State and Air Force are opponents that the Spartans will see again this season.

SJSU does have a shorter time to practice as their next meet will be all the way in Cape Girardeau, Mo. on Friday.
