San Jose State’s women’s water polo (#13) suffered a 17-8 defeat this afternoon against the University of Southern California (#1).

The team now moves to 13-11 and 2-4 in MPSF play as the regular season closes out.

The Spartans were able to stay in the match early but became overwhelmed by the Trojans starting in the second period where they conceded fourteen goals up until the final whistle.

It wasn’t SJSU’s night, having only a 30% accuracy on goal compared to USC’s 55%.

Sophomore Rose Jensen and freshman Nynke Williamson were able to capitalize early for SJSU in the first period, with Jensen scoring twice.

Jensen also scored five goals with two assists, making her involved in seven out of eight goals scored by the Spartans this afternoon.

“I think our continued experience against these hard opponents is going to continue to set us up for success,” head coach Beth Harberts said.

Sophomore Darcy Spark’s goal in the fourth quarter, would be her 68th total for the season.

This puts her in a tie for ninth place on the SJSU single-season scoring list with Dani Curran (2009).

Next, the Spartans enter the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Tournament as the fifth seed and will face the fourth seed team on April 25 at 2:30 p.m. at UCLA’s Spieker Aquatics Center.
