After seven seasons as head coach for San Jose State Football, Brent Brennan accepted a five-year deal to make him the next head coach at Arizona according to ESPN’s Pete Thamel.

The Spartans now become the fourth school affected by Nick Saban’s retirement. The legendary head coach’s decision prompted Alabama to hire Washington’s Kalen DeBoer, who was replaced by Arizona’s Jedd Fisch.

The departure leaves SJSU in search for its 30th head coach in school history.

Brennan has a 34-48 overall record. More notably, he became the first head coach in SJSU football history to lead the Spartans to three bowl games, the Offerpad Arizona Bowl in 2020, the Famous Idaho Potato Bowl in 2022 and the EasyPost Hawai’i Bowl in 2023, but failed to win one.

In 2020, Brennan lead the Spartans to their first outright Mountain West Championship. The first outright conference championship for SJSU since 1990 in the Big West. Brennan was awarded coach of the year in the Mountain West after the season.

Most recently, after a tumultuous 1-5 start to the 2023 campaign, Brennan led the Spartans mid-season revival as they racked off six straight wins to end conference play, and finished in a three-way-tie for first in the conference. SJSU would miss the conference championship due to the Mountain West’s computer rankings.
