SJSU Track and Field dominates in Spokane

The San Jose State track team dominated the Spokane Indoor Challenge with seven different first-place finishes across the event. 

Friday

Most notable on the first day were sophomores Christopher Coats and Demaris Waters

Waters took the win in the 60-meter hurdles with a time of 7.75 seconds. That time currently ranks at eighth in the nation. 

Coats competed in two events, the 400 and 200-meter dash. Finishing third in the 200-meter with a time of 21.30 seconds which tops at seventh in the nation. In the 400 meters, Waters took the crown with a time of 47.03 seconds which is the second highest nationally.

Ahead of Coats in the 200-meter dash was sophomore Jeremiah Walker. Walker finished second with a time of 21.19.

Jumping ahead most of the competition was sophomore Ajamu Reed, who finished second in the long jump at a 7.60-meter jump. Both Walker’s and Reed’s times are currently rank fifth nationally.

Finishing back-to-back in 60-meter hurdles were senior Micah Hairston and freshman Malachi Snow who finished third and fourth. Hairston finished at 7.78 and Snow finished at 7.83.

And lastly for the men’s was senior Jacob Lopez, who threw his way into third in shot put with a 16-meter throw. 

The women still went out to compete with two podium finishes.

Sophomore Audreanae Hagan finished third in the 60-meter hurdles with a time of 8.26 seconds.

Closing it off for the women was junior Lina Schubert with a second-place finish in the high jump, finishing at a 1.71-meter jump. 

Saturday

With the day and two-day event coming to an end, five first-place finishes were achieved.

Sophomore Alyssa Bean started the first finishing party with a time of 56.52. Right behind her finishing in third was senior Sarah Mosteller at a time of 57.43.

In a 4×400 relay with a team consisting of Bean, Mosteller, sophomores Savana Dutton and Aliyah Williams finished atop the podium with a time of 3:46.96.

While in the 200-meter dash sophomore Eve Divinity took second at the pace of 24.83 seconds.

Also shining again were Walker, Coats and senior Pablo Villasenior.

Walker sat atop the podium in the 200-meter dash finishing with a time of 21.24 seconds. 

Coats also took the first-place title for himself in the 400-meter dash with a time of 47.17 seconds. Walker finished third in the event at 48.37 seconds. 

Villasenior threw the best with a 16.08-meter throw in the weight throw. 

In a team consisting of Walker, senior Harry Overstreet, Hairston and Coats in the 4×400 relay, they would combine for a second-place finish at 3:12.48.

Jumping his way into second was freshman Ethan Fong who finished with a 14.16-meter jump. 

Lopez took second in the shot put with a 15.53-meter toss. Villasenior finished third with a 14.31 meter. 

With young faces shining for the track team, they will next travel to compete in the University of New Mexico Open on Jan. 26-27.
