San Jose State (3-5-5) faced off against Wyoming (5-5-3) in a rematch of the 2022 Mountain West Championship. But this time the Spartans would not come out on top and would lose 1-0.
SJSU had a strong first half but, fifth-year defender Kiana Miyazato would receive a red card in the 50th minute forcing SJSU to play with one less player for almost 40 minutes.
“You can’t really control red cards and being a man down,” Head Coach Tina Estrada said. “I’m proud of how they played through the second half.”
Sophomore goalkeeper Bente Pernot was proud of how the team fought against a good squad like Wyoming despite losing a player.
“We play with a man down and we kept them at bay until the last minute,” Pernot said.
It was a goal in the 88th minute from Wyoming that put the nail in the coffin for SJSU women’s soccer.
“The last two minutes kinda killed us,” Estrada said. “We were trying to keep it when we should have got it forward.”
Graduate student midfielder Sabrina Weinman had four shots, with three on target on the night. Weinman knows they have to capitalize on these chances for an important stretch of games coming up.
“[We need] to stay composed putting away our chances so we can put teams away,” Weinman said. “Every game from here on out we need to get the three points.”
“We didn’t execute the end of the match tactics,” Estrada said. “We finish one of [our first half chances] and it’s a completely different game.”
SJSU women’s soccer will look to snap their two-game losing streak against Colorado State at the Spartan Soccer Complex on Sunday at 12 p.m.
