Fifth-year goalkeeper David Sweeney shuffled to his right before immediately diving left, breaking the San Jose State all-time record for career saves in the 49th minute on Oct. 5 at the Peter Johann Memorial Field.

Sweeney passed alumnus Keith Bateman who had 253 saves and last played in 1995.

Sweeney finished with four saves on the night, bringing his career total to 255. Sweeney continues to add to his tally to separate himself from Bateman, who had 253 saves during his career.

SJSU men’s soccer (4-4-4, 1-1-1 WAC) suffered its first conference loss to UNLV 2-0 after giving up two goals to the Rebels at the start of the second half.

Senior defender Louis Hiepen scored the Rebels’ first goal in the 48th minute and freshman forward Tyler Ware scored UNLV’s second goal in the 51st minute.

“The game was won and lost in the first 10 minutes of the second half,” said head coach Simon Tobin.

The Rebels (2-5-2, 1-1-0 WAC) dominated the Spartans in shots 14-10 and shots on goal 6-3.

“Credit to UNLV, they came out firing in the second half,” said Tobin.

Spartans with shots on goal were senior defender Joel Garcia Jr., sophomore forward Anthony Guzman and sophomore forward Riccardo Scarafia, who each had one.

Sophomore midfielder Angel Iniguez led the Spartans with three shots.

SJSU failed to earn conference points in this match but currently sits fourth in the Western Athletic Conference Standings.

“We got to get ready for Sunday and try to get some points on the road,” said Tobin.

The Spartans’ next match is against the Utah Tech Trailblazers at 12:30 p.m. on Oct. 8 at Lancer Soccer Field in St. George, Utah.

SJSU will look to hand the Trailblazers (6-4-0, 2-0-0 WAC) their first conference loss.
