SJSU women’s tennis (No. 8) upset top seed Wyoming (No. 1) with a 4-2 blow in its second round of the Mountain West Championship.

The Spartans responded with a pivotal perseverence after narrowly losing the doubles point.

With the championship on the line, junior Jovana Babic delivered the final punch with a singles performance that resulted in SJSU’s clinch (6-3, 1-6, 6-4). Babic, who has been struggling with a two-game losing funk, was the team’s pièce de résistance.

Fifth-year Alba Pedrero Galindo put the team on the board with her efficient singles win (6-1, 6-2). Pedrero Galindo has been flourishing during this championship run, racking up two singles wins in a row.

Junior Irena Muradyan and sophomore Olaya Bances Iglesias also won their respective matches. Both Muradyan (6-4, 7-6) and Iglesias (7-5, 6-3) were a part of the three total tiebreaker matches in singles. The two have consistent results in singles and are riding a two-game win streak.

When SJSU faced Wyoming earlier in the regular season, they were met with a disappointing 4-2 loss that led to a four-game losing streak. But today’s victory was nothing of the sort. The team showed great improvement and fought tirelessly to keep their championship hopes alive.

SJSU women’s tennis is one step closer to the Mountain West trophy. However, they’ll have to defeat Air Force (No. 4) tomorrow at 11:00 a.m. if they want a chance at the chip.
