Millan and Pedrero Galindo in doubles | Titus Wilkinson – The Spear
SJSU women’s tennis (9-10, 4-4 MW) conquered No. 1 seed Air Force (10-9, 6-2 MW) and shut down its six-game winning streak with a 4-2 tiebreaker win. The Spartans have since sparked a two-game win streak.
Today’s high-octane victory couldn’t have been secured without junior Carolina Millan‘s tremendous singles clinch (6-4, 7-6). Millan won five games in a row during her second set. This includes her 7-0 tiebreaker sweep that frustrated her opponent and resulted in enthusiastic screams from both teams.
Fifth-year Alba Pedrero Galindo won her last singles match at a home game (6-4, 6-2). Although she will be graduating with fellow senior teammates Lara Marco Mas and Raquel Villan Pereira, she maintained a consistent energy throughout her match that brought SJSU its first point of the game.
Juniors Irena Muradyan (6-4, 6-3) and Rozalina Youseva (6-2, 7-5) were victorious in their singles matches. The teammates had narrow scores in their first sets, but they were able to finish strong and deliver when it mattered. Both players lead the team in singles wins, with Muradyan boasting 15 and Youseva boasting 14.
The double’s matches started out promising, but SJSU’s momentum fizzled out over the course of each match.
Pedrero Galindo and Millan began the game with fierce aggression, leading 3-0. Instead of clutching the win early on, their game was left as an unfinished 5-5 stalemate that could’ve sparked some momentum.
But even without the doubles point, the team was still able to honor seniors Pedrero Galindo, Marco Mas, and Villan Pereira in style with a narrow victory.
SJSU women’s tennis will travel to Las Vegas to play Mountain West opponents SDSU and UNLV on April 21 and 22. Shortly thereafter, they will close out the season with the Mountain West Championship on April 26.
