After a dominant past few weeks, SJSU women’s tennis (5-6) ended its win streak with an upsetting defeat against USF (7-5), resulting in a 4-2 upset.
The game, which has been postponed multiple times due to inclement weather, was finally held at the Spartan Tennis Complex.
The afternoon began with the team’s blessing in disguise, doubles matches. The doubles point has proven to be an important aspect of the match. The team’s energy peaked as the words “let’s go Spartans” bounced their way onto each court.
Senior Lara Marco Mas and junior Jovana Babic had continued success in doubles, adding to their 3-0 record and clinching the point for the team. The partners have a three-game winning streak together, acquiring the longest streak for any doubles team this season.
Additionally, junior Irena Muradyan and senior Rozalina Youseva also put on a powerful performance in their match, finishing first and leaving their opponents scoreless (6-0). Muradyan now has a 9-7 record in doubles.
Unfortunately, the team’s early success failed to prevail. SJSU started off shaky in singles with a few rough sets. Only one out of five completed matches had a successful win in their first set.
That belonged to Youseva, the only Spartan who was victorious in her singles match. She won her match (6-4, 6-1) and boasts a 10-4 overall singles record.
Usually, the doubles point is vital for the team and plays a large role in a win. But today, the momentum gained in doubles ceased to trickle down to singles, and the Spartans were unable to maintain that same fierceness they had against Santa Clara and Saint Mary’s.
Both USF and SJSU had a two-game win streak going into today’s game. However, the Spartans had the short end of the stick.
SJSU women’s tennis will face Boise State (7-4) on Sunday at 10 a.m. and Utah State (5-5) on Saturday at 10 a.m. Its matches will kick off an extensive series of exciting conference matchups.
