SJSU women’s tennis (5-5) swept Saint Mary’s (4-5) with a stellar doubles performance resulting in a 4-0 win.
After going on the road for their match against Santa Clara, the Spartans looked to spark a winning streak. They came out victorious against Saint Mary’s from the momentum gained by earning the doubles point.
Senior Rozalina Youseva and junior Irena Muradyan clinched the doubles point for the team after a 7-6 (7-1) tiebreaker win. Their match featured many fierce volleys that characterized their relationship on the court, making it a fun matchup to watch. The duo now boasts a 4-3 record together, and Muradyan has amassed eight total doubles wins with four different partners.
Junior Jovana Babic and senior Lara Marco Mas won in a tiebreaker as well, 7-6 (7-4). Marco Mas and Babic strongly disagreed with some of the referee’s decisions during their fiery match. Nonetheless, this dub marks their second win together.
The momentum gained from securing the doubles point trickled into the team’s singles matches. At one point, four players were up 3-0 in their first game.
Today, Marco Mas did not take the court in singles. Instead, Junior Raquel Villan Perreira played in her place, dominating and clinching the win for the team (6-4, 6-2). After three tough losses, she was able to overcome the dry spell with a dominant and important win.
Junior Carolina Millan had another efficient win under her belt, finishing first for the team (6-3, 6-0). She now has a 7-5 singles record, mirroring Marco Mas’s singles record.
Muradyan also competed boldly, finishing second and winning her match (6-1, 6-1). Muradyan leads the team in singles wins, boasting an 11-4 record.
It should be noted that obtaining the doubles point early is key for the team and vital for gaining momentum during a match. The team has shown great improvement in doubles thus far, especially with both last week’s performance and today’s powerful execution.
SJSU women’s tennis will be back on Wednesday, March 22 at 12 p.m. USF (5-5) will finally make its way to the Spartan Tennis Complex after being postponed twice.
