San Jose State women’s soccer (6-5-5, 5-2-2 MW) defeated Colorado State (4-6-7, 1-3-5 MW) 1-0 on the road in Fort Collins, Colorado on Thursday afternoon.

Freshman midfielder Sabrina Weinman scored the game-winning goal for the Spartans on a free kick in the 89th minute.

Weinman was 1-for-3 on shots on goal and played 81 total minutes. Freshman goalkeeper Bente Pernot recorded three saves.

“What a beautiful set piece that was for Sabrina Weinman,” said SJSU head coach Tina Estrada. “She can score that every time and to do that in the last minute of the game is super exciting.”

The Spartans had their opportunities to score in the first half, but did not convert. SJSU had six shots on goal in the first half and two corner kicks, but still went into halftime scoreless.

The SJSU defense was solid in the first half, only allowing three shots on goal. Pernot had two saves in the first half, anchoring the Spartan defense.

The SJSU women’s soccer team won its sixth game of the season on Thursday.

The Spartans managed to get three more shots on goal in the second half. It looked like the game was going to hit extra time.

A Colorado State foul at the 89th minute set up a free kick for the Spartans and Weinman was summoned to attempt a free kick from just outside of the penalty area.

Weinman scored, hitting the top left corner of the goal, giving the Spartans a 1-0 lead and an eventual victory.

“Even though it wasn’t the cleanest game for us, to win [the game] in the last minute was huge,” said Estrada.

SJSU women’s soccer will continue its road trip and play Wyoming on Sunday at 12 p.m. in Laramie, Wyoming.
