San Jose State football freshman running back Camdan McWright passed away at age 18 on Friday morning. He would have turned 19 in December.

“We lost an amazing young man tragically this morning,” said SJSU head coach Brent Brennan. “Camdan had a bright future ahead of him and everyone in this community that had the opportunity to spend time with him knew that.”

McWright was pursuing a degree in communications studies at the time of his passing, aspiring to become a television sports analyst. He enjoyed superhero movies and reading newspaper comic strips in his free time, according to his bio on the SJSU Athletics website.

A football standout at St. Genevieve High School in Panorama City, Calif., McWright was named Camino League Most Valuable Player twice and was a first-team all-league honoree. He was also named to the 2021 CalHiSports.com first-team all-state as a multi-purpose player.

Additionally, McWright was a two-sport letterman and was named the 2021 Santa Fe League track and field champion in the 100 and 200 meters events and successfully anchored the 4×100 meter relay team.

SJSU Interim President Steve Perez said in a statement, “The loss of our student is heartbreaking and devastating for our San José State community. We grieve for Camdan, his family, friends, teammates, and the Spartan family. We grieve together and will provide all of the support that Camdan’s family, our students and our football program require to help move through this tragic time.”

SJSU Athletic Director Jeff Konya added, “The San José State community is a very close one, and the campus is devastated. We lost a very bright, talented young man too soon. Our heartfelt thoughts and prayers go out to the McWright family.”

The staff at The Spear extend their deepest condolences to the McWright family and everyone affected in this tragedy. SJSU offers counseling services through its CAPS program to assist anyone dealing with hardship and tragedy.

Subsequently, SJSU Athletics announced that the football team’s upcoming game against New Mexico State University is now “pending,” as they quote, “will do what’s best for the student-athletes.”
